Swee Heng VS Swee Heng 1989 Classic

This bakery caught my attention since I begin working at one of the unit located at The Seletar Mall, Basement 1 beside Fernvale LRT station 2 years ago. Unlike other halal certified bakery, the creation of the breads and pastries were uniquely creative. Its PANDAN KAYA ROLL which is no longer in its sales item was the first product to satisfy my picky taste bud for its smoothly rich and mildly sweet pandan kaya custard rolled neatly with the pandan cake.

If you are familiar with the Mall, you would have guess the shop's name correctly! Yes, it is Swee Heng 1989 Classic.

After knowing its name and went to do some research. Initially I was confused with another bakery name: Swee Heng also halal certified, after identifying their bakeries location and the products they sell. I came to a conclusion that both Swee Heng 1989 Classic and Swee Heng are from the same company "Swee Heng Bakery" but provide different tiers of retail concept. The former caters to customers who prefers more choices and has higher buying power as they are mostly located in the shopping centres while the latter caters to customers in the neighbourhood with reasonable pricing.

You will notice that there would be some variation of items sold in these two retails concepts, some breads and pastries can still be can be found in both bakery shops as they are delivered from the main factory.

Qn: So, why am I posting information on Swee Heng Bakery and not just jump straight into the food review I am going to write?

Ans: The reason is, I'll need my readers to understand how I came across this bakery and what triggers me to continue to buy their product.

In my next post, I'll be sharing some thoughts and review on one of their food products. Stay tune!!

9 February post on Brownie from Bedok Ananas bakery....

Last week, I went to Chai Chee to run some errands, thus, I've decided to walk around at Bedok Town Centre. Unknowingly, I walk pass a rather big neighbourhood bakery (Bedok Ananas) and noticed big blocks of Brownies on the tray. Usually not many bakery would bake brownies, instead most would bake muffins which seem to be easier.

Brownies from Bedok Ananas would be my next review... stay tune!!

Four Leaves Chocolate Roll

Address:
Available at all Four Leaves outlet
[purchased at Bugis Junction]

Cost:
4pcs - S$3.90 [a little tad expensive :|] (Almost equivalent to $1 per bun)

Review:
After taking a packet of the chocolate roll, 7 - 8 packets were still available on the shelf. Upon purchasing, the staff who place the packet in the plastic bag told the cashier "London Choco Roll". I find it quite amusing and funny.. haha.. (there has been a popular commercial - London Choco Roll that was advertised on the television)

Outer Layer: Though the outer crust of bread looks dark and sturdy but it is very soft, delicate and tears off quite easily for the fingers. Suitable for children to eat.

Filling: The chocolate filling came as a surprise to me, on top of that, the taste of the filling puts me on cloud nine. The taste reminds me of the chocolate fondue from Tangs department - rich, semi sweet and smooth while being slightly sticky. The amount of the filling is quite pathetic and seemed like the company is in a tight budget!

Inner bread: The flesh of the bread is soft, appropriate moisture and oiliness is just right. The size of the bubbles that formed the flesh of the bread during baking was just appropriate, neither huge (spacious) nor tiny (compact). Thus making the bread soft and easily tear off evening using the lips. However, the flesh of the bread does not seems to carry any chocolate taste which was what I am expecting it to have... I felt disappointed in it.

Overall: Initially I thought it looked like charcoal bread... haha. However, upon one bite, it is marvellous on the inside.

Uniqueness: Soft flesh with semi-sweet chocolate fondue taste filling

What I Like: Chocolate fondue taste filling (just buy this bread and be able to enjoy the taste of chocolate fondue!!)

Conclusion: I like the taste of the filling and would buy it more often if it cost $3 ~ $3.50 for a packet of 4. On top of that if the amount of the filling is slightly more, this chocolate roll would definitely be on more demand!

The Benefits of Chocolate

Why Chocolate Is Good for Us

The pure purpose of this post is to share those related great articles which I have come across or read, to the readers of my blog!

In recent years, large-scale epidemiological studies have found that people whose diets include dark chocolate have a lower risk of heart disease than those whose diets do not. Other research has shown that chocolate includes flavonols, natural substances that can reduce the risk of disease. But it hasn’t been clear how these flavonols could be affecting the human body, especially the heart. New findings from Virginia Tech and Louisiana State University, however, suggest an odd explanation for chocolate’s goodness: It improves health largely by being indigestible.

Researchers at Louisiana State reached this conclusion after simulating the human digestive system in glass vessels. One represented the stomach and the small intestine, with their digestive enzymes, and a second reproduced a large-intestine-like environment, with gut microbes from human volunteers. The scientists then added cocoa powder to the stomach vessel.

The “stomach” and “small intestine” broke down and absorbed some of the cocoa. But while many of the flavonols previously identified in chocolate were digested in this way, there was still plenty of undigested cocoa matter. Gut bacteria in the simulated colon then broke that down further into metabolites, small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream and known to reduce cardiac inflammation. Finally, the last undigested cocoa matter, now mostly fiber, began to ferment, releasing substances that improve cholesterol levels. And there was another health-giving twist to this entire process: The gut microbes that digested the cocoa were desirable probiotics like lactobacillus. Their numbers appeared to increase after the introduction of the cocoa, while less-salutary microbes like staphylococcus declined in number.

These findings are broadly consistent with those from Virginia Tech, published in March in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Researchers there began by feeding healthy lab mice a high-fat diet. Some of the mice were also given unsweetened cocoa extract; others were fed various types of flavonols extracted from the cocoa. After 12 weeks, most of the mice had grown fat and unwell, characterized by insulin resistance, high blood sugar and incipient diabetes. A few, however, had not gained weight. These animals had ingested one of the flavonol groups whose chemical structure seems to be too large to be absorbed by the small intestine.

What the results suggest, says Andrew Neilson, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech and the senior author of the mouse study, is that “there is something going on with cocoa in the colon,” but what that means for chocolate lovers is not clear. Future experiments, he hopes, will tease out why one flavonol group impeded weight gain and the others did not. Do not hold your breath for a cocoa-based diet pill anytime soon, though. Cocoa’s biochemical impacts are “extremely complex,” he says.

Sadly, Dr. Neilson also points out that cocoa is not a chocolate bar, something whose added ingredients and processing reduce the number and type of flavonols, increase calories (cocoa itself has very few) and possibly change the response of gut bacteria to the cocoa. “The evidence does not show that you can eat a chocolate bar every day and expect to improve your health,” he says. A few tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder sprinkled onto oatmeal or a handful of cocoa nibs — bits of the cacao bean, available at natural-food stores — would be better, he says less than sweetly.

Double Chocolate Chip Muffin from Famous Amos

Address:
Available at all Famous Amos outlet (while stock last)
[purchased at Tampines Mall - does all muffins of franchise outlet taste the same??]
Cost:
1pcs - $2.80,
4pcs - $10.80 (Saves $0.40) [a little tad expensive no matter what, :|]

Review:
I had it taken away at about 2:30pm last Friday, left three pieces on shelf after purchasing. Shop attendant also the cashier placed the muffin in a paper bag and asked if I need a plastic carrier. Muffin was at room temperature at time of purchase.
Top Layer:  A generous amount of chocolate chip at the top.
Base: Taste is the same as of the top however, the chocolate chip might be heavier then the consistency of the muffin before or during baking, thus they sank to the bottom and are not evenly spread out in the muffin.
Overall: The muffin is slightly moist and spongy. As compared to the softness of marshmallow, it is slightly harder. No distinct taste of chocolate on the muffin unless there are chocolate chips in that bite. Only about 3 speckles of crumbs were seen on the paper bag after eating and the paper bag and my fingers were slightly oily.
Uniqueness: The amount of crumbs after each bite was close to nil.
What I Like: The chocolate chips which have sink to the bottom of the muffin which creates the chocolaty taste for the muffin. Hardly any dropping crumbs when eating, thus convenient to eat while on the go and would not be messy.

Conclusion: Nothing special with regards to this muffin. Might not purchase again.

New URL, New Name for the blog as on TODAY 19 June 2014

Dear readers / visitors,

I've planned to change my URL today which is 19 June 2014 to a new one which is:
choconion.blogspot.sg

This idea comes from [choco]late + opi[nion] = [choco][nion]  (pronounced as [chaw-kuh-n-yuh n])

Not to be mistaken as choc and onion....., I dislike onion thus it would not be the case!!

Why?
This is because, after searching through the two popular search engines, I could not find that URL anymore. In addition, I find that most blog had similar names and to prevent look alike that causes confusion. I hope that my blog's name and URL will stay with me till the last day (do now know when but maybe until I am dead)

Instead, I've come out with this new name which represent both areas:
1. My blog relating to chocolate and
2. The purpose of this blog.

FYI: my previous URL was chocaffair-bml.blogspot.sg

Thank you for supporting by visiting my website...
